Helms, Schwartzkopf Face off for GOP Nod
By KRISTIE GOODALL
Staff Writer
A few determined voters braved Tuesday's
downpour to participate in the primary elec-
tion for the District 8 Horry County Council
seat.
Supporters of Republican Carl
Schwartzkopf outnumbered those of Donald
Helms and Mike Roberts to push him toward
the Dec. 16 general election.
"I'm surprised," Schwartzkopf said. =I did
not expect to be the top vote getter."
However, Horry-Georgetown Technical
College professor Schwartzkopf did not
receive the 50 percent plus one votes needed
to avoid a Nov. 18 runoff wlth Helms. The
run-off originally scheduled for Nov. 11 was
changed because of the Veterans Day holi-
day.
Of the 1,439 votes cast, 1,314 went for
Republican candidates with Schwartzkopf
getting 587, Helms getting 434 and Roberts
getting 293.
This leaves a big job for Democratic candi-
date Brandon Sessions who won the

According to the Horry
County Solicitor's Office the
Jury's vote was 10-2 in favor
of conviction. For Ms.
Haithcock to be convicted of
murder, the jury's vote
needed to be unanimous.
Her new trial is scheduled
to begin Tuesday.
Haithcock is accused of
killing Kenneth Wayne
Coates Sr. by shooting him
twice in the head.
Coates left a friend at a
bar where the two had been
playing pool Jan. 6, 2001,
to go see his girlfriend.
That's the last time any-
one saw him until his dead
body was found Jan. 24,
2001, in an abandoned
home on the 6200 block of
Dongola Highway.
Deputy Solicitor Bert von
Herrman told the Jury this
past week that the case
against Haithcock is cir-
cumstantial, but said
there's enough evidence to
be convinced that she killed
and robbed Coates.
Bill Whittaker of Myrtle
Beach said he and Coates
went to several bars, played
pool and sang karaoke the
last time he saw him.

house began to deteriorate.
Lawrimore built a room
onto his house and moved
his mother in with him.
Since then, her house has
been empty, leaving it open
to vandals and pillagers.
That's why he went to check
Jan. 6 about midday when
he saw a white Explorer
parked in front of the
house.
He testified that he saw
